The Wood Stove Exchange Program Update:
The Clean Air Society's Wood Stove Exchange Program" of 2009/2010 was just that, a great success. Thanks to a grant from the Ministry of the Environment, distributed through BC Lung, we were able to distribute 78 rebates of $250 each to local citizens who choose to get rid of their 'old belchers' in favour of a new, low or no emission appliance. The District of Sechelt provided matched funding of $100 per participant who resides within the District - a total of 26 additional rebates were distributed.
Three "Burn It Smart" workshops were offered in February to educate local residents on the many ways they can make a difference for local air quality by being conscientious wood stove users. WETT certified instructor, Zigi Gadomski gave excellent presentations including a demonstration of old and new wood stove technology ~ and the billowing smoke from the non-EPA certified stove was ample evidence of the unhealthy impact from these stoves.
- The Clean Air Society is again applying for this provincial wood stove exchange program funding, and we are confident that our success in catalyzing change-outs and partnering with local stakeholders (government and home heating businesses) will provide a strong proposal with good chances of being supported again. We will be hearing back from the Ministry in the month of October, and hope to begin the program just in time for 'burn season'.
